Scope

The International Congress on Mathematical Software is a bi-annual congress that gathers the mathematicians, scientists and computer scientists who are interested in the development of mathematical software. The ICMS has traditionally been a satellite meeting to the International Congress of Mathematicians, which this year is being held in Philadelphia the week following the ICMS. For more information on past conferences, see the ICMS home page.

Symmetry is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature and science, providing optimal or extremal configurations in problems such as sphere packing, energy minimization, and sampling. The scope of this session is to highlight recent advances in the theoretical and computational exploitation of symmetry in both symbolic and numerical settings. This includes symmetry-adapted algorithms in computational invariant theory, representation-theoretic methods for reducing algebraic systems and optimization problems, and modern approaches to orbit reduction, block-diagonalization, and invariant or coinvariant bases. Emphasis will be placed on applications to polynomial and semidefinite optimization, sparse and structured tensor computations, and symmetry-aware numerical methods. Contributions presenting new or improved algorithms in finite or algebraic group theory, as well as implementations leveraging reflection groups and nonlinear group actions are also welcome. The session aims to bring together researchers developing rigorous algebraic foundations with those applying symmetry methods to concrete computational challenges.

If you are interested in giving a talk, please submit a short abstract to math"at"tobiasmetzlaff"dot"com until 1 March 2026.
